DosaFil® Resolves Issue Of Inefficient Underfloor Heating At Large Secondary School

At this time of the year in the colder months, central heating and underfloor heating systems are pushed to the max. If a heating system fails it can leave businesses in chaos, potentially facing closure and/or installing costly temporary heating solutions.

Generally, issues with your heating system are often down to the pipes. If your underfloor heating is a wet system, which runs from a boiler, then it could be a blockage or trapped air in the pipes. Cold spots on underfloor heating systems could mean there is an internal blockage and flushing the systems could be the answer. This is where the DosaFil-Duo® device can help.

The case study below demonstrates how DosaFil® helped to resolve the issue of inefficient underfloor heating at a local secondary school.

The school contacted DosaFil® as their underfloor heating was not working as it should. They were seeing REDUCED efficiency, REDUCED heat output and an increase in energy consumption and bills. Infrared imaging at the school clearly showed that there was an issue and that much of the corridor was not receiving any heat.

Results after week 1

Following only 1 week of online cleaning the 1 micron filter bag in the DosaFil-Duo® S+ was removed (see image below) and replaced with another clean 1 micron filter bag.

Further infrared images were taken to determine the initial success of the remediation program and the images below speak for themselves. Infrared monitoring shows just how effective the clean was and the school noticed an immediate difference in heat output. It was also quick, taking just 1 week to restore the heat output to pre-existing level.

Chemical analysis confirmed correct levels of all treatments and a significant improvement in water quality. Microbiological analysis confirmed control of microbiological activity had been restored.

DosaFil® Cleans Care Home Heating System Online, Preventing Shut Down

During certain times of the year, central heating systems face heavy demands. Combine this with poor water conditioning - and it is estimated that over 50% of commercial heating systems do not have effective water treatment in place - and system failure, breakdown and inefficiency are common. This can leave businesses in chaos, potentially facing closure and/or installing costly temporary heating solutions.

In central heating systems, it is common to find sludge, which is a result of built-up dirt and debris inside radiators. Sludge limits the flow of water throughout the central heating systems making both heat pumps and radiators work harder. Not only do heating bills unnecessarily rise, but if sludge if left unchecked and untreated, boilers can fail.

So, how can you tell if there's sludge in your heating system? Cold spots and reduced heat from radiators are an obvious sign of an internal blockage. Thankfully, sludge can be easily removed from heating systems with the DosaFil-Duo® device.

The care home contacted DosaFil® as its central heating was not working properly. They had experienced ongoing issues with blocked radiators, as well as poor heat distribution in resident's rooms and in the communal areas of the car home. They were seeing REDUCED efficiency, REDUCED heat output and an increase in energy consumption and bills.

As a care home for elderly residents, it was of paramount importance to resolve the issue as quickly as possible, and without shutting down the heating system since this would have required temporarily relocating the residents and staff - an expensive and logistically difficult task that is likely to have a negative effect on the well-being of residents. The care home wanted to avoid this outcome, and thanks to DosaFil®, they did.

The DosaFil-Duo® S+ device was then installed to carry out online cleaning with no downtime or disruption to staff or residents of the care home. It was combined with environmentally-friendly solid chemical treatments from SolidTek (see below):

No manipulation of the system was carried out and the DosaFil-Duo® was simply left online to clean the central heating system. Filter bags were changed weekly for the first two weeks then bags were changed only when the DosaFil-Duo® DP alarm was triggered.

The remediation program was a success and heat was restored to parts of the care home building that were previously without heat, and thermostats were being reduced across the building as heat output overall was much improved.

Which is safer: a magnetic device or physical filter?

Health and safety is one of the biggest considerations in plant rooms, so it's worthwhile assessing the pros and cons of magnetic devices vs physical filters in terms of safety and operation.

Devices containing magnets pose significant health and safety risks to people, and risks to equipment. The stark danger signs on the sides of these devices often include warnings such as:

Because of the risks, risk management then becomes quite a big job for those using magnetic devices (as opposed to those using physical filters, for example).

In contrast, magnet-free physical filtration devices pose no such health and safety risks, nor do they pose a risk to equipment. As such, they can be considered the safer option.

Why properly maintained systems don't need magnets

Magnetic filters are often pitched as the answer to keeping closed heating and cooling systems free of harmful and energy draining contaminants. Yet, they are actually not required in systems which are properly maintained.

BSRIA BG50.2021 states:

"Magnetite has an average particle size of 8um, which is too small to be captured by conventional barrier filter technology."

It goes on to say….

"Not all debris is magnetic and filters incorporating an element of non-magnetic retention may be preferred".

Let's take a closer look at the types of fouling in closed systems and whether the contaminants are attracted to magnets:

So, out of eight types of fouling, only one type - iron magnetite - is attracted to magnets.

On the contrary, correctly specified physical filters will remove ALL of these types of fouling.

Offering little advantage (and many disadvantages, including higher expense and health and safety considerations), why fit magnets?

Physical filters are clearly the most beneficial choice for closed systems where suspended solids are of concern.

How to save energy and reduce commercial heating costs
